Ok, well first off I'm going to attempt to upload and install a standard phpbbplus1.53a install straight from the download area here from Jan 12th, don't think there would have been any updates in the package since then.
Just uploading the necessary files now...
And I've set everything all up, and it works perfectly no problems.
Installing seems a lot quicker and easier than it was when I originally installed it almost 2 years ago on the 22th January 2006.
Tomorrow, since it's 1:21 am here.
I'll try your theory above and if it works I'll report success here |

I haven't tried what you said but I tried restoring the database on that test forum I set up which worked perfectly.
Once I restored that db, I loaded the portal it worked.
I went to the forum, all my categories had gone but that didn't matter since it was only a test/experiment.
But then I went back to the portal and it didn't run, it did what I explain in my first post was just blank.
So some evidence points to my database.
So I'll do what you mentioned soon, as well as restore the db config from the previous database as it seems important particularly after my experiment.
Also I mention my viewtopic.php wasn't working.
I uploaded a new version I downloaded from the package here at phpbb.de and it worked. |

looks like we're getting somewhere.
Regarding the missing categories, try deleting (or give it a temp rename) the existing includes/del_tree.php, your old categories should show back up.
Im starting to wonder if there is something SPECIFICALLY in the the phpbb_config table that states how the board should be run, E.G php3/php4? Not that it should matter because, php5 is backwards compatible. |

Well unfortunately your theory failed.
I decided to try it after things got even worse, the portal page stopped working again along with dload.php and index.php as well as viewtopic.php some other files work such as privmsg.php.
I did everything you said and It still doesn't work.
Ok, well I completely cleared cache and everything.
and it works!
I restore the original portal.php but it doesn't work. (and that's from the package I copied from phpbb2.de site last week)
then I went to dload.php and it stopped working too.
Well... at least index.php and viewtopic.php still works, at least that's a start!
But it'll probably randomly stop again :S |

I'm thinking of doing what I attempted above.
Meaning I'd have to re-install all my mods :S
Which will take a very long time because some of those mods took quite a while to install! But I guess it'll be my only option!
and unfortunately I have just gone back to my new install of phpbbplus only to find it's got the same problem.
http://www.drivermadness.net/othersites/phpbb2plus_test/portal.php
noting, that I restored my previous database over it!
So it seems once again it is something to do with the database!
This seems so confusing...
I'll make one more test install without any scripts to see if this problem continued when my database hasn't touched it!
EDIT: I reinstalled the script again
http://www.drivermadness.net/othersites/phpbb2plus_test2/portal.php
and I'm not sure what to hope for, but it'll shed some more light on the problem.
It looks like it's going to be really, really hard to target this problem.
Maybe my only choice is to change hosts!
I've had so many bad experiences with my host bluehost and I think it's time to change, it's just so annoying considering I payed so much to be with them! I think about my options and hopefully someone can open up a few more for me!

I wonder if it's the cache thats messing things up? Umm, XS mod? Can that be disabled?
I use ifroggyhosting, they're good. I've also use 1and1.com but I'm getting annoyed with them lately. |

I once installed MediaWiki and it said there where no cache accelerators installed on the server. But now I'm at the point I just want to convert my old phpbbplus forum over to phpbb3! and just leave it a simple old problem-less forum. |

Here is what I tried, so far it is working just fine.
Goto ACP --> eXtreme Styles, Manage Cache (if Manage Cache is not on your list: Config --> Check Manage Cache and Submit) --> CLEAR ALL, then COMPILE ALL.
If you have more than 3 themes installed on your boards you may get a warning about server stress or server load. Just compile cache for each theme separately. |

i've also noticed this happening when sites have a lot of people signed up and they're on the calendar. |

i think CTRACKER causes this problem. i have noticed i couldn't make changes ACP--Portal --Settings . CBACK Security Alert appears when i tried to change settings.
we are all waiting plus up to date with all mods (cback is not updated, too) |
